Hey everyone!
We hope you’ve been having a great semester so far. Due to the circumstances, we are living in right now, it is understandably difficult for everyone. The social isolation with the added pressure of school, work, and other responsibilities can often lead one down an unhealthy lifestyle. Below, we have tips for you to have a healthy daily routine:
Number One: Maintain a healthy sleep schedule and routine
Generally, the average person needs 6-8 hours of sleep every day. Having adequate sleep every day has proven to lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and other diseases as well as allowing yourself to keep your energy up during the day, improve your mood, and fight off anxiety and depression. Make sure to take care of yourself and prioritize your health by allowing your body to take a long rest.
Number Two: Exercise
Your physical body’s condition is also reflected in your mental health. With online classes, it is easy to sit in front of a computer all day. There are many websites and resources that can provide guidance on how to exercise at home. The link provided below is just one of many that you could look at. Make sure to set aside time to get some exercise in!
Number Three: Set up a homework/work-station
It is easy to get distracted if you work in your bedroom and it is easy to develop unhealthy habits that way. If possible, study outside your room at the dining table or in a separate room. Being stuck in the same space to work and relax can be tiring for your mind, but by separating these two you can give yourself breathing space to relax and do self-care.
Number Four: Establish a daily routine
Routines help establish some stability for one’s mental health. If you follow a routine consistently, your mental health will be more stable! For example, what time do you want to wake up every day, when you will be eating, when you want to have class, etc. Letting your mind and body know what to expect will help a great deal. Additionally, making a list before you go to sleep on what you need to do the next day can also help start a productive day!
Number Five: Set aside time every for yourself to do what you enjoy
Self-care is important! Don’t let yourself get too overwhelmed with classes and other activities, set aside some time for yourself and do what you enjoy! It is ok to take breaks and allow yourself to breathe from all the stress.
Number Six: Get help when you need it!
If you are struggling, talk to your professors, friends, or even reach out to USC’s services such as making an appointment through MySHR on MyUSC where you can make an appointment with a counselor or attend other self-care workshops! Additionally, check out our resource page for a plethora of different contacts relating to mental health.
